This Day in Dayton, 7 March

In 1898, the Thompson implement store was flattened by wind; the owner planned to rebuild (Home Journal, March 1898). In 1898 Van Burton’s store (apparently the building erected by Samuel Favorite in the 1830s) burned to the ground. The March 7, 1898 Dayton Items in the Home Journal reported that “The rebuilding of the general store of Van S. Burton is decided upon and a large force of workmen are on the ground and the work will be pushed forward as fast as possible. Mr. Burton has been confined to the house for some time with rheumatism, but is improving slowly.” Mr. Burton rebuilt, but died a few years later, in 1901.
