This Day in Dayton, 22 February

On a snowy day in 1912, February 22, the interurban derailed on its way through Dayton, causing a memorable wreck in the center of town. The cars struck Richardson Restaurant. Twenty people were injured. Pictures show it in front of Nicely’s Store (Sesqui 77; Robert Kriebel, Old Lafayette, Journal and Courier of unknown date). The snow had started falling on February 20th and reached a depth of between 10 and 20 inches and badly drifted. Rural mail carriers could not make their deliveries because the country lanes were so clogged. Graveside services in the cemetery took all day to complete. (Dayton items, Lafayette Daily Courier, 23 February 1912).
