This Day in Dayton, 12 January

In January, 1987, Bob Milikin posted a sign in his yard in Japanese. People got curious and excited, wondering if it was a slam at the Japanese at the new auto plant. A photo of the sign even made it into the Journal and Courier. When it was deciphered, it was revealed that it was all in fun. It said “House for Sale, 21 million yen” (even with a grammar error in the Japanese). 21 million yen amounted to about $133,000. (“Translation: No Harm Done: It was just a sign of the times in Dayton,” Journal and Courier, 13 January 1987)
