This Day in August, 21 August

On August 21, 1863, the battle of Chattanooga got underway. Lilly’s Battery (the 18th Indiana) fired the first shots at the horse ferry, and Wilder’s Brigade attacked from the north to mask the real attack in the south. Also present was the 10th Battery Light Artillery (“Yankee Artilleryman”). Bragg abandoned the city, and on September 9 the Federals occupied Chattanooga. The 40th and the 10th L.A. were assigned to guard the city.
