This Day in Dayton, 20 August

On arriving in Kentucky in August 1862, the 72nd was immediately set to pursuing Morgan’s cavalry, a frustrating job for foot soldiers. After one hard march, the men returned to camp at Louisville to find that they had visitors from home, among them, Mrs. Samuel (Louisa Heaton) Kirkpatrick (McGee, p. 56). Visitors were not only a welcome sight, but often brought badly needed clothes and food. Such necessities were also sometimes received by mail from home
