This Day in Dayton, 17 August

On August 18, 1934, approximately 1000 people attended the fourth annual Sheffield township community day picnic. It was combined with the second annual Pioneer Day, sponsored by the Tippecanoe County Historical Association. Events were held at Dayton school and included a softball game between the Monitor and Dayton 4-H club boys (Dayton won), basket dinners at noon, an afternoon program about Pioneer Day, musical entertainment by Ray Peterson and Mary Godfrey, a parade of winning 4-H club livestock, and another softball game. The evening brought a Dayton band concert, a 4-H girls dress review and a style show of early costumes. Exhibits included 4-H and Home Economics Club projects, antiques, old books, glassware and dishes, furniture, and farm implements.

The Pioneer Day program featured papers by Eleanor Ilgenfritz, Lucille Marshall, Plat Bayless, William Reser, Elmer Waters, and Miss Frances Favorite, who recounted various aspects of local history.
