This Day in Dayton, 12 August
On August 11, 1862, bidding goodbye to family and friends who had come to see them off, the 72nd regiment “took the cars” [=the train] to Indianapolis. At Indianapolis on August 15, U. S. Senator Henry S. Lane of Crawfordsville presented the regiment with a flag. It was a “star spangled banner,” a gift of the ladies of Brown township, Montgomery county, especially the work of 93-year-old Nancy Green of Waveland. Major Kirkpatrick made the acceptance speech. You may visit the Lane home in Crawfordsville to this day.
