This Day in Dayton, 4 August
On August 4, 1987, a headline in the Journal and Courier read “Dayton, WL approve porn law.” After an eleven-month battle, the Dayton and West Lafayette both passed an ordinance to regulate adult entertainment businesses. The same ordinance was under consideration by the Tippecanoe County Commissioners, Lafayette, and battle ground, but those three parties postponed action. In Dayton the measure passed quietly, with a unanimous vote. All ten members of the public in attendance were reported to approve of the action. West Lafayette’s vote was 5-1 after a debate of about an hour and a half.
