This Day in Dayton, 3 July

The 72nd Volunteer Infantry Regiment arrived in Indianapolis in late June 1865. As soon as Samuel Kirkpatrick heard of their arrival, he rushed from Tippecanoe County to be reunited with his old unit. Final mustering out was delayed, and someone gave everyone $5 so they could go home for the 4th of July. All returned to Indianapolis on July 5 and were mustered out at last the next day. (Since pay and bounty were distributed at mustering out, everyone returned!)
