This Day in Dayton, 16 July

On July 16, 1986, a headline in the Journal and Courier read: “Japanese: Sites in Indiana considered.” An accompanying map pointed out three locations: Ivy Tech, County Road 200 S (AKA Haggerty Lane), and Indiana 38 next to Dayton. Dignitaries from Japan and the state and Lafayette arrived by helicopter and charter bus at each site. Local and Indiana officials were pledged to secrecy as to what was being considered. The Japanese also visited sites in Illinois, and in Shelbyville and Terre Haute in Indiana.
