This Day in Dayton, 16 May

In May of 1988 the local issue was a landfill that was proposed for Sheffield township, the township where Dayton is located. At a public meeting, State Rep. Jim Davis faced Dayton-area residents determined to defeat the proposal. They organized as SCAT, Sheffield Citizens Against Trash. The meeting became so large it had to be moved from the Dayton fire station to the Dayton Elementary School. After Lauramie Township residents successfully convinced the Area Plan Commission to rezone most of their township to make it impossible for Pro-Eco to buy property for a landfill, Sheffield township residents hoped to do the same. Ultimately they were successful in defeating the landfill.
