This Day in Dayton, 24 April

24 April 1861: A letter dated 24 April 1861 was received by Lavina and Eli Frantz, reporting that Lavina’s parents, Peter and Elizabeth Edris of Berks County, Pa., were canceling their planned visit to Tippecanoe County. The letter cited the “great fuss about the revolution,” bad times, trains full of soldiers, closed businesses, and scarce money, all blamed on the war. The Frantzes lived in Wabash township in 1861, but moved to a farm south of Dayton in 1863, where John and Nancy Brand now live.
