This Day in Dayton, 23 April

On April 23, 1883, a group of veterans of the Civil War gathered at Dayton to organize a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) post. The post was named Charles Elliott Post, in memory Captain Elliott, who with the men of Company A, 40th Rgt. Indiana Infantry, had led the charge at Kennesaw Mountain and lost his life in the process. Charter members were: Adam Andrew; David Baer, Owen Biery, D. J. Boyles, G. W. Boyles, J. R. Boyles, William H. Burkhalter, Robert Cantrell, J. H. Crouse, James Godfrey, F. M. Haten, George W. Johnson, E. T. Leiter, F. J. Orb, T. W. Rowe, J. H. Smith, L. T. Strother, and William Thompson.
