This Day in Dayton, 15 April

15 April 1861          On Monday, April 15, 1861, following Lincoln’s request for 75,000 volunteers (in state militia units), Gov. Morton issued the first of several calls for troops.

15 April 1865          On Friday, April 15, 1865, Lincoln was shot. William Hershey and some buddies, who had sneeked out of camp in Washington City to see the performance at Ford Theater, witnessed the assassination but were unable to tell about it because they didn’t have permission to be there.
