This Day in Dayton, 12 November
In November 1870, Dayton hosted two events in close succession. From the 8th to the 11th Prof. J. A. Butterfield’s Musical Convention took place here, closing with a “grand concert” at the Methodist church. This seems to be a sort of seminar of music classes for amateurs, concluding with a public performance. Two numbers mentioned were Mozart’s “Gloria” and “The Sanctus” from the 12th Mass. The newspaper pronounced it a great success. (Courier, Nov. 12, 1870). Then on Sunday, November 22, the County Sabbath School Institute met at the Dayton ME church (Courier, Nov. 12, 1870).
